Sowing and transplanting period
When to grow eggplants?
If you start from the sowing the eggplant, sowing in March, trying to protect the sowing from the cold with a greenhouse or a seedbed. Sowing in March must be done maintaining a temperature around 25 degrees. When the first true leaves sprout on the seedlings and the night temperatures do not drop below 10 degrees, proceed with planting in the garden.
If you start from already developed seedlings, you can transplant between the end of June and July if you live in the north, you can anticipate the transplant in mid - end of May, if you grow in southern Italy.
Distance between plants
Planting should be done by placing the seedlings about 50 cm away from each other, in rows 70-90 cm apart. You will also need to eliminate the yellow leaves to avoid the appearance of alternaria.

Water abundantly especially if the summer is particularly hot and dry. The irrigations must be daily in case of cultivation of aubergines in pots.
Irrigation must be timely, especially during the fruit swelling phase so as to have large eggplantsand regular shape. Water greatly affects the size of aubergines.
While the fruit is developing, keep the soil slightly moist, the ideal would be to continue with mulching. Be careful when watering the aubergines: never wet the leaves, so as not to favor the development of fungal diseases.
In summary: irrigate the plants every day, trying to maintain constant soil moisture. Wet the soles on the foot without moistening the aerial part.
Caring for eggplant plants
To obtain swollen fruits, water and fertilizers must not be lacking, especially when the plant is grown in pots.
If in the past you have had problems with powdery mildew or other fungal diseases on Solanaceae (potatoes, aubergines, tomatoes, chillies, peppers, Goji berries ...), I recommend that you perform preventive treatments with copper sulphate, so as to avoid aubergine diseases such as phoma, sclerotignosis and powdery mildew.
Not plant the eggplant in the vicinity of the potato and do not grow in the usual spot for more than two consecutive years.
Against aphids you can use nettle macerate. As stated, if the plant grows too much, use a brace to support the stem.
Theeggplant plantsthey can produce fruit until autumn. In southern Italy, the temperatures allow for harvests until October - November!
To support high production withlarge eggplants, fertilize the soil with slow release fertilizer. Use a nitrogen-based fertilizer, able to act for several months in a row so as to fertilize only once.
Among the various market proposals I recommend the use of nitrogen-based fertilizer in sticks (slow release). On Amazon, this fertilizer is offered at a price of 4.66 euros with free shipping costs. I use it not only for eggplants but for most of green plants. For all information, I refer you to the product sheet:slow release fertilizer in sticks.
Collect the eggplant
For harvesting, do not wait for the fruit to ripen too much, to prevent it from becoming inedible when emptying excessively.
