Basenji: character and prices

Basenji, also called Congo dog, so it seems clear to me where this wonderful animal of about ten kg comes from, attentive, intelligent and sweet, unfortunately for now still little known in our country. In truth, in Europe only England gives it the space it deserves.

The Basenji belongs to the category of Spitz-type and primitive-type dogs and retains various characteristics. Its name comes from the language Bantu and it means indigenous, has other names that describe it, in addition to Congo dog: dog of the Egyptians, to whom he was very dear, and then dog of the African bush, dog that does not bark. And then the more tribal avuvi, ango angari.

Basenji: origin

The origins of the Basenji whereas his first photos are to be found in hieroglyphs of the times of the pyramids. For a long time it was believed to be extinct, this dog so much celebrated by pharaohs and Egyptians, but it reappeared at the beginning of the 19th century and the British, colonizing Africa, found it in the regions between Congo and South Sudan. A few decades and here is the Basenji to land in Europe.

In Africa the pygmy tribes used this prized breed for hunting, noting the excellent sight, speed and its ability to push prey into the hunter's nets. Versatile, the Basenji could also do from guide dog in the forest and signal dog of ferocious animals. The Azande and Mangbetu tribes gave it the name in that African period:Basenji is the translation of "dogs of the savages" or "dogs of the villagers".

Once in Europe he met experts and scholars who thought of him as ancestor of the "Terriers", it is not an official hypothesis and it must be said that having been for centuries in a limited territory, the Basenji instead it has always maintained a certain purity.

Basenji: I wait

About ten kg for the male, less than 10 for the female, the Basenji it is a dog that reaches a height of about 40-45 cm at the withers, is of medium-small size. It is certainly not a purse but it is small even if very powerful, it is not big. It has a proud bearing, despite its size, and a proportionate body, with short and straight back and long and muscular limbs.

The tail is nicely rolled up in a spiral while the muzzle is rather pointed and ends with a black nose. The snout of the Basenji it is characterized by large marked wrinkles above the eyes and between the ears, the ears are very particular, small, pointed and straight upright in frontal position.

The eyes of the Basenji they are always dark, beyond the color of the coat, almond-shaped, oblique. The hair, already mentioned, is short and silky, the allowed colors are different: the chestnut with white spots, and white tail tip is the most common combination. Various examples of Basenji also black-white, fiery black-white. Returning to the chestnut, sometimes black spots or shadows appear on it and the white spots become very small. Excluded from the standards and exhibits are cream colored specimens.

Basenji: character

Suitable both as a hunting dog and as a companion dog, the Basenji it is an animal suitable for companionship, for making it and for receiving it, and it is also sweet with children. It never barks, every now and then, but it is an exception, he utters yelps or howls, but is usually quiet and also very clean, cleans himself like a cat and also has a cat-like behavior. independence. Not that he is not affectionate, but he sees man as a friend and does not submit to anything.

The Basenji does not even dare to be afraid, it is reckless, to the point of unconsciousness, to the point of escaping in pursuit of a prey, chasing cars or trucks or even trains as if they were. It is famous for its escapes and at home you will often find it in raised positions, to better control the territory.

Love company, it can hardly do without it, if it does not have it it can become destructive, and hates rain and water. Beyond the climate, even if it comes from Africa, the Basenji he does not encounter any problems in adapting to European apartments, on the contrary, it seems that he is very comfortable there if you often take him to run and let off steam.

Basenji: herds

In Italy it is not a very well-known dog, in Europe only England breeds it with honorable numbers, but there are at least three breeds that we mention here: the Basenji delle Case Rosse, ENCI approved since 2007, on Basenji Italy, of the amateur type, in Rosignano Marittimo (LI), and the Anubi's Enigma, located in Veneto.

Being a primitive dog the Basenji it has inherited the characteristic of some other primitive breeds: its females come into heat only once a year. As for thesupply it is omnivorous and undemanding, it eats less than a normal dog of its size and its powerful jaws allow it to eat even bones normally forbidden to dogs. However, I recommend not testing them and giving your pet dog food like other less primitive breeds.

Basenji: price

The price of a Basenji puppy hovers around two thousand euro. Yes, it is by no means a modest price but a lot is due to the fact that it is little known in Italy and to the characteristic of the annual heat of the females that does not help its diffusion.

Who couldn't afford a puppy he can begin to desire it with more modest prices by reading the book that tells his life from his point of view. The title is Woody, is a very engaging book and one that will lead us to adore this primitive and intelligent dog, he wrote it recently Federico Baccomo Duchesne and illustrated it Alessandro Sanna. You can find it here, and it is an excellent read for both those who want and those who already have a Basenji.
